Oahu Hikes with Pono, the Canine Ambassador

Oahu is a treasure trove of hiking trails so beautiful that they grace the desktop wallpapers of office-goers nationwide. It’s easy to get lost in the brightly colored beaches, verdant jungles, and plunging mountains that are begging to be explored. Luckily, one of the island’s most popular resorts has a special guide to keep you on track.

Meet Pono

At Turtle Bay Resort, you’ll get to indulge in all of your island fantasies. Sipping cocktails with little umbrellas by the pool, get a Coconut Lava Shell Massage at the spa, and do an Oahu hike to a picture-perfect beach led by Pono, the resort’s Canine Ambassador! Pono’s hiking excursion takes place every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 10 am at the resort. He’ll lead you on an easy 1.5-mile hike to gorgeous Keiki Beach, a locale made famous for its impressive shore break by surf photographer Clark Little.

Keiki Beach

Although we could spend hours watching huge waves hit the sand at Keiki Beach, this strip of coast offers much more than whitewater. Depending on the tide, you can wade in the safer offshore pools that gather or explore Oahu’s native marine life in Keiki’s tidepools. The atmosphere at Keiki Beach is a peaceful one, and you’ll have plenty of time to lounge in relaxation before heading back to the resort with Pono by your side.

Give Back to Our Furry Friends

While the hike is free, guests are encouraged to donate to Hawaii Fi-Do, a local non-profit organization that helps train service dogs for people with disabilities. This is the same non-profit that trained Pono. Donations can be made at The Guidepost, and you can always learn more about the hike and the mission by contacting Turtle Bay Resort at 1.866.475.2567.
