Shake Up the Stadium at a Hokie Football Game

There’s something magical about college football. Even if you’re not a sports fan, you can find something to appreciate in the school spirit, energy, and pride that emits from students gathering together to cheer on their alma mater. Something is exciting about seeing the team run out onto the field and the flash of the official school colors merging in the crowd. The air fills with sounds of cheering as the school mascot makes their debut across the field to liven up the audience, and their subsequent chants echo throughout the stadium. This electricity of anticipation is what football fans feed off of, and the reason college football is such a staple part of university life that can be appreciated even after you graduate.

Home of the Hokies

Virginia Tech is one of those schools whose iconic football games have made waves far beyond the campus. Students at Virginia Tech are known as “Hokies,” and they take their football season very seriously. Hokie Nation takes over from the very first kickoff to the very last touchdown. Games at Hokie stadium are known for their rowdy fans that make the anticipation of a game palpable. If you’re in town, catching a football game is a great way to get a taste of local flavor. However, there are a few things you should know to get the full Hokie experience.

Jump Around

If you’re going to go to your first Virginia Tech football game, be sure to wear comfy shoes you can jump around in. That’s because Hokies are known to show their enthusiasm by jumping up and down in unison to the point that the stadium shakes. Hokies have been known to get so into their jumping that they actually create seismic activity! That’s right, only one place in the world can you get fans to cause a mini earthquake for a football game. If you’re unsure when to start bracing yourself, just wait for the queue of the Hokie’s famous entrance song, “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. This millennium hit has become the team’s iconic anthem for entering onto the field and part of why the Virginia Tech football team’s entrance has been dubbed one of the best in college football.

Tailgating Traditions

Another huge part of Virginia Tech’s football traditions is tailgating. Rather than tailgate out of your car in a parking lot, Hokie’s take it to the next level. Hokie Village is a top spot to find Hokie fans enjoying time with friends and family. Pumping music, an array of food trucks, and a beer garden to quench your thirst create the perfect atmosphere to get in the cheering spirit. Virginia Tech athletes also tend to make special appearances in the village, so you might even be able to snag an autograph or selfie with your favorite teammate. Keep your eyes peeled for the school Spirit Squad and the HokieBird – Virginia Tech’s official mascot! When you hear the March to Victory begin, you’ll know it’s time to start making your way to the stadium to continue the fun.

The Inn at Virginia Tech

Staying at The Inn at Virginia Tech is the best way to immerse yourself in all things Hokie. Not only is the hotel located right on campus, but it also holds its own popular tailgate pregame during every home game. During this three-hour long tailgate, you can expect live music, complimentary food, and plenty of fans. At the Inn at Virginia Tech, returning alumni and Blacksburg visitors will enjoy a nostalgic atmosphere, luxe rooms, an unbeatable location, and dedicated events that happen around the inn each month.
