When searching for that perfect Summer vacation, weekend or just-because beach getaway, wouldn’t it be nice if you already knew of the perfect coastal destination?
A place where there’s plenty more to do when you’re ready to leave the actual beach. A place that isn’t overdeveloped and crowded. A place where the air feels fresh and the ambiance peaceful.
There is such a place, and we’ve already found it for you.
Welcome to Vero Beach, Florida. A picturesque little beach town perfectly situated on the Vero Beach Barrier Island on the Treasure Coast of Florida. About 2.5 hours north of Miami on the Atlantic coast, Vero Beach is both a calm beach town and a dynamic city.
While most beach towns offer just that – a beach or two – Vero Beach offers an entire experience for its visitors and locals alike.
It’s truly a place where nature, society, billionaires and blue collar workers thrive alongside one another.
So what can you expect to experience during your Vero Beach getaway?
Vero Beach boasts more than a few upscale boutiques, most of which can be found on Ocean Drive. Men and women’s apparel, fine olive oils, specialty items and more, shopping along Ocean Drive is aesthetically pleasing in more ways than one.
McKee Botanical Gardens
Located on a tropical hammock at the southern gateway to Vero Beach, Florida lies one of the most soothing places in the area – McKee Botanical Gardens. Literally listed as one of the 22 Most Soothing Places of Surprise and Sanctuary in North America by National Geographic, the McKee Botanical Gardens are a must-see on any visit to Vero Beach. Discover trees, waterfalls and historic structures as you stroll through the extensive 18 acres of preserved and restored land.
Family Run Microbrewery
How many beach towns boast a family run microbrewery? Vero beach does! Orchid Island Brewery is a small family driven company based out of the Indian River County and has built a reputation for making high performance citrus IPA’s and custom barrel aged sours. The area in and around Vero Beach is widely known for producing some of the world’s finest citrus, which is represented in the delicious beer.
One of the best aspects of a beach town is being able to munch on fresh seafood and to dine beachfront! Everything from unique fish to fine Italian is available and ready to surprise and delight your palette! For that beachfront experience we recommend trying the Ocean Grill – a seafood and steakhouse literally on the sand. For unparalleled seafood and the finest wines, try The Tides Restaurant.
Have an Epic Kayak Adventure
Within Vero Beach lies the Indian River Lagoon, which runs between the mainland and the barrier island and is both breathtakingly beautiful and immensely biodiverse. The lagoon is home to more than 3,000 plant and animal species and can be explored via kayak! You can rent kayaks or take an actual guided kayak tour – whichever floats your boat!
Farmer’s Market Oceanside
Every single Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon the Farmer’s Market Oceanside takes place. Recognized as one of the top 50 true farmer’s markets in America, this market is truly an incredible experience to partake in. Delicious fresh produce, yummy cooked meals, baked goods, gift items and much more await you from stall to stall in the market.
One of the most fascinating and brave creatures on our planet – the sea turtle – uses Vero Beach’s’ beaches for nesting! Literally a fourth of the world’s sea turtles choose to nest in and around Vero Beach and have been doing so for thousands of years. When it’s actual nesting season, nesting tours are available for the public. There are no words to describe how incredible it is to watch the beautiful creatures lay their eggs! Two months later those same little eggs have hatched and become thousands of baby sea turtles who have to make the perilous journey back to the sea! Most don’t make it, but those that do will eventually return to Vero Beach to lay eggs someday. For more information regarding sea turtle nesting season, visit here.
Magnificent nature, delicious libations and plentiful shopping and entertainment, Vero Beach is an all-inclusive unique destination of its own.
The town itself is dedicated to preserving the natural beauty, so much so that there is a strict policy preventing any building from rising above the height of four stories.
“Many of the visitors to our town are shocked by it – but always in a good way,” explains Maggie O’Briant Director of Marketing at Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa. “Compared to many of the other beach towns and bigger Florida cities, Vero Beach feels like a hidden paradise, a place where even celebrities feel unnoticed strolling down the street shopping, eating, and enjoying the beaches. It’s just calm in a relaxed and satisfying sort of way, and it’s for that reason more than any other that people continue to visit year after year.”
