If you’re looking for a spring destination where you can experience the best concerts, dine on delicious food, and see some out-of-the-box artwork, then look no further than Knoxville, Tennessee. This month marks the beginning of festival season in the city, meaning the streets will be bustling with the sounds of the latest upcoming bands, and the air will be filled with the wafting smell of street food. Here are some of our favorite things to do in Knoxville during April.
Kicking off the musical festivities, the Rhythm N Blooms Musical Festival showcases bands that represent Eastern Tennessee and highlight Knoxville’s eclectic musical history, from Booker T. Jones to Dr. Dog. Another great musical event taking place in April is Volapalooza, a small end of the year university concert turned student organized bonanza. Today, there are two stages with rotating acts, plenty of food trucks to keep you satiated, and a crowd energy and excitement like no other. This year’s headliners are Zella Day and Black Bear.
Hit the Streets
Some of the best performances take place right on Knoxville’s sidewalks, and the SideWalk SideShow brings them all together during a wacky and wonderful street festival. On April 21st don’t be alarmed if you see sky-high stilt walkers, aerialists, giant puppets, and marching bands take over the Old City. Also, be sure to head over to Market Square that same day to see the Dogwood Arts ChalkWalk, an event where students and professionals transform the sidewalks into beautiful chalk masterpieces.
A Dose of Culture
April is all about art in Knoxville, starting with the First Friday ArtWalk. Enjoy the evening gallery hopping and discover that perfect painting you’ve been envisioning for your living room wall. Then on April 14th get a taste of the international art scene during the Rossini Festival International Street Fair. World-class opera, jazz, and gospel performances will take place on five outdoor stages, and the entire area from downtown Gay Street to Market Square will transform into a European-style marketplace filled with artisans from all over the world.
