Snowshoe Around Lake Tahoe’s Backcountry For a Perfect Winter Escape

Lake Tahoe is one of those places that changes dramatically with the seasons. From summertime river rafting and paragliding to wintertime skiing and sledding, the tides of the seasons transform the town so visitors can experience entirely different atmospheres from month to month. While skiing and snowboarding reign as winter adventure staples, we thought we’d look into some of the more unique activities around the lake that you can get into once the snow starts falling.

Dog Sledding

If you thought you had to head to Alaska or Norway to take a ride on a dog sled, think again. Right in Lake Tahoe’s backyard, Wilderness Adventures offers a dog sled tour that will give you breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada mountains, led by a rambunctious group of canine companions. You’ll be guided by an expert musher and have plenty of opportunities to take photos while breathing in that fresh mountain air.

Lake Fishing

Unbeknownst to many, winter offers the perfect conditions for fishing. Trout venture closer to the surface in colder water and there are fewer boats to disturb the surface. Other fish you can snag on your line in Tahoe are Kokanee Salmon, Rainbow, and Mackinaw. Start your day out right with a crisp and peaceful morning or afternoon charter with Tahoe Sport Fishing Co.

Snowshoeing

Try snowshoeing for a fun alternative to winter hiking. There are plenty of areas around South Lake Tahoe where you can explore the backcountry or the shoreline on snowshoes. For smoother, flat areas, try Bijou Park and for a more challenging elevated trek, try South Maggie’s Peak where you’ll be rewarded with an impressive view of the surrounding area.

Heavenly Village

When you’re not exploring the decadent landscapes, take a stroll through Tahoe’s charming Heavenly Village. If you stay at the Forest Suites Resort, you’ll just be 100 yards from all the shops, restaurants, and bars that make this village a wonderland during the colder months. The resort offers one and two bedroom suites with full kitchen, dining, and living areas that will make you feel right at home during your stay.
