Summer is a great time to stretch your legs, whip out your sneakers, and start training for that local race that’s right around the corner. From walking a leisurely 5k to setting your pace during a marathon, there’s always an event that caters to your level. Plus with iconic races all over the nation, such as the Boston Marathon, the Color Run, and Bay to Breakers, you have plenty of events to choose from.
Wharf to Wharf
In Santa Cruz, the race that stands out most is the Wharf to Wharf Race that takes place annually on the 4th Sunday in July. The race attracts over 16,000 runners who look to run the 6-mile course and cross the finish line at Capitola-by-the-Sea. It’s the most popular event of its kind on the West Coast and is a major boost to Santa Cruz’s local economy, bringing in over 8 million dollars a year!
No Need for Headphones
What makes this race so unique is that there’s live entertainment throughout the course. The Wharf to Wharf race has over 50 bands, dancers, singers, and other acts serenading athletes along each mile. This makes for a great boost of energy for both racers and spectators and is one of the main reasons people travel so far to participate in this race.
Pro Tip: If you’re not ready for a 6-mile course, or just want an encore, then check out the Little Wharf 3-Miler that happens on September 29th. More info here.
