Miami Fashion Week kicks off May 15 when fashionistas, celebrities and top designers descend on Miami Beach Convention Center for North America’s first-ever international fashion show focused on designer resort wear. In previous years, the event was limited to Latin American designers but the new owners are opening the show up to the world.
Just a sample of high-wattage domestic and international brands presenting at Miami Fashion Week this year include: Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood, Ágatha Ruíz de la Prada, Rosa Clara, Alberta Ferretti and Barcelona’s hot up-and-comer label, Custo.
So, what is “designer resort wear”?
“Our line is designed for the free-spirited woman who makes a grand yacht or poolside entrance,” says Tim Gorgol, creative director of the Miami-based Indie Soul label.
Gorgol, who launched the brand in 2013, employs a proprietary hand-dying process developed by artisans in Peru and Colombia. He says, “That ensures that no two pieces are identical, just like the women donning them.”
During Miami Fashion Week, a new Pop-Up Boutique Show has been designed to offer a hybrid wholesale/retail event for private, buyers-only shopping hours and public weekend hours.
